Description

We normally share tests for a limited time. This one is permanent.

Pietro Mascagni
"O Lola" from Cavalleria Rusticana

Recorded in 1910
at the Camden Studio

Enrico Caruso died in 1921, the first valve that could amplify sound was introduced in 1922. In spite of his fame, Caruso never sang into a microphone. All of his recordings are acoustic. In the late '70s the Soundsteam process was used in an effort to remove acoustic artifacts from his recordings, which was not particularly successful. You cannot process acoustics accurately from a mono signal, especially from an acoustic one which isn't mono in the first place. This may be the first time anybody has heard Caruso's actual voice since 1921.

This is a test of our own processing to achieve what the old process did not; Caruso without artifacting at full acoustic. This process was made at original level for acoustic accuracy, it is not loud. Any attempt to boost the signal in mastering destroys the sonic image. You can, however, adjust the volume to your tastes without damaging the output.

Make sure Stable Volume is turned off here, it defeats the whole purpose of the test.
